2024 Summary - Paddy

Updated on:

My first summer as Director of Vacational Studies was both challenging and rewarding. Much of my time this year was devoted to preparing for a British Council inspection, for which we will receive the verdict in September. The criteria are stringent, and while many requirements are common sense, they must be meticulously documented in the form of policies and procedures. Naturally, we act in loco parentis and strive to provide the best and safest experience for all the young people who come to us.

The transition from my previous role in sports and social activities—where I often found myself with paint on my face or sliding down a soap slope—to the position of Director has been a dramatic change, but one that I enjoy and am eager to grow into.

Working closely with Ian Mucklejohn throughout the year and during the course has been an enjoyable educational experience for me. I hope to impart some of my own knowledge to Ian as well; however, with 51 years of experience in the field, there is little that Ian has not encountered in the world of VacStuds.

This year, I will be undertaking a CELTA course in teaching English as a foreign language in Leeds. I aim to gain a fully rounded understanding of the Course and its operations, and a significant part of that is the delivery of English teaching. For the remainder of the year, I will continue making preparations for 2025.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to VacStuds 2024. A special thanks goes to Ian for all he has done for my mentoring throughout the year. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Tom, Matt, and Joe for providing valuable insights into the course management and academic aspects of the programme. Additionally, I would like to thank Madalena for being an exceptional Matron and a tremendous support to me at VacStuds since Covid. Rebuilding the momentum of VacStuds after Covid was a significant challenge, but with her help and the help of other staff members, we have certainly succeeded. You will be missed. Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to Benedict, who has been an outstanding Senior Sports Organiser. It has been a pleasure to see you rise to the top and execute your role with such efficiency and enthusiasm. Thank you for your unwavering support over the years.

See you in 2025....
